Urban Planning
City planners use GIS to analyze land use, model population growth, plan infrastructure, and assess the impact of development proposals. Zoning maps, transit catchment areas, and walkability scores are all GIS products.
Emergency Management
Emergency services use GIS for dispatch routing, flood mapping, evacuation planning, and post-disaster damage assessment. During a wildfire, GIS helps track the fire perimeter, identify at-risk communities, and coordinate evacuation routes.
Environmental Monitoring
Environment Canada uses GIS to monitor air and water quality, track wildlife populations, map wetlands, and model climate change impacts. Conservation organizations use it to identify priority areas for protection.
Public Health
Health authorities use GIS to map disease outbreaks, identify areas with poor access to healthcare, and plan vaccination campaigns. During COVID-19, GIS was central to tracking case distributions and planning vaccine rollout.
