An approach to system design that builds privacy protections into technology and processes from the outset, rather than adding them later.

Privacy by Design was developed by Dr. Ann Cavoukian, former Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario. Its seven principles include: proactive not reactive, privacy as the default, privacy embedded into design, full functionality, end-to-end security, visibility and transparency, and respect for user privacy. It has been adopted as an international standard.
